SUMMARY:New Years Day
DESCRIPTION:New Year’s Day\n\n\n\nNew Year’s Day is the first day of the year\, in the Gregorian calendar\, and falls exactly one week after the Christmas Day of the previous year. \n\n\n\nNew Year’s Day is a public holiday in all countries that observe the Gregorian calendar\, with the exception of Israel. This makes it the world’s most widely observed public holiday. \n\n\n\nSome countries may also have January 2nd as an additional New Year holiday. \n\n\n\nCountries who still use the Julian Calendar observe New Year’s Day on January 14th. \n\n\n\nWho is working on January 1st? \n\n\n\nIt is traditionally celebrated with firework displays across the globe at 00:00 in the local time zones.

SUMMARY:Boxing Day
DESCRIPTION:Boxing Day\n\n\n\nThis public holiday is celebrated on December 26th in several countries as part of the Christmas holidays. \n\n\n\nTypically it will be moved and celebrated on the next working day if December 26th is a Saturday or Sunday. \n\n\n\nTraditions of Boxing Day\n\n\n\nIt has been said that the name of Boxing Day comes from people getting rid of empty boxes from presents after Christmas day. While a beguiling notion\, the tradition dates back to England in the middle ages\, though the exact origin is debatable. \n\n\n\nThe name certainly has stronger ties to the Victorian era: it was first included in the Oxford English Dictionary in the 1830s and became a bank holiday in 1871. \n\n\n\nOne theory is that it comes from the fact that servants were given their presents in boxes on this day\, the 26th being the first working day after Christmas day. This tradition of giving gifts for service extended beyond servants to tradesmen\, such as milkmen\, butchers\, etc. \n\n\n\nSamuel Pepys mentions the practice in a diary entry from December 19th 1663: “Thence by coach to my shoemaker’s and paid all there\, and gave something to the boys’ box against Christmas.” \n\n\n\nAnother popular theory is that it is named after the custom of priests opening alms boxes in churches after Christmas. These held money that had been donated to the poor and needy in the run-up to Christmas. Some churches still open these boxes on Boxing Day. \n\n\n\nBoxing day is not a tradition in the United States\, so that indicates that December 26th didn’t become observed as such until the late 18th century\, otherwise\, it would have been imported to the Americas by settlers from England. \n\n\n\nUnited Kingdom\n\n\n\nBoxing Day has been a Bank Holiday in England\, Wales\, and Northern Ireland since 1871. Having this status during the height of the British Empire explains why this holiday is still celebrated in many Commonwealth countries. \n\n\n\nHunts were a Boxing Day tradition but the 2004 ban on foxhunting put an end to all that. However\, many people still regularly turn out to support hunting. Certain modified forms of hunting foxes with hounds are still within the law and several Boxing Day meets take place every year. \n\n\n\nBoxing Day is also a time when the British show their eccentricity by taking part in all kinds of silly activities. These include bizarre traditions such as swimming the icy cold English Channel\, fun runs and charity events.  \n\n\n\nSt. Stephen’s Day\n\n\n\nIn non-Commonwealth countries\, the day is more commonly referred to as St Stephen’s Day or the Feast of Stephen as mentioned in the carol ‘Good King Wenceslas’.

SUMMARY:Christmas Day
DESCRIPTION:Whilst the holiday has a strong grounding in the story of the birth of Jesus\, many of the traditions we associate with Christmas have evolved from pre-Christian beliefs and certainly\, the traditions have evolved beyond purely a Christian holiday to have a wider secular significance. \n\n\n\nThe celebration of Christmas in late December is certainly as a result of pre-existing celebrations happening at that time\, marking the Winter Solstice. \n\n\n\nMost notable of these is Yule (meaning ‘Feast’)\, a winter pagan festival that was originally celebrated by Germanic people. The exact date of Yule depends on the lunar cycle but it falls from late December to early January. In some Northern Europe countries\, the local word for Christmas has a closer linguistic tie to ‘Yule’ than ‘Christmas’\, and it is still a term that may be used for Christmas in some English-speaking countries. Several Yule traditions are familiar to the modern celebration of Christmas\, such as Yule Log\, the custom of burning a large wooden log on the fire at Christmas; or indeed carol singing\, which is surprisingly a very ancient tradition. \n\n\n\nUnder the Julian calendar\, the winter solstice was fixed on December 25\, and this date was also the day of the popular Roman holiday of Saturnalia\, in honour of Saturn\, the god of agriculture; which was later superseded by Sol Invictus\, a day that bundled up the celebration of several sun based gods into one easy to manage festival. \n\n\n\nAs Christianity began to take hold across the Roman empire and beyond\, the date of when to celebrate the birth of Christ became a bit of an issue\, with several different dates proposed. \n\n\n\nIt wasn’t until 350 AD\, when the then Bishop of Rome\, Pope Julius I\, fixed the official Christmas day on December 25. Unfortunately\, Julius\, I didn’t show his working out on how he reached this date; some scholars later suggested that it was calculated as nine months after the Annunciation (March 25)\, when the angel Gabriel is said to have appeared to Mary and told her she would bear the son of God. Whatever the reasoning\, it is clear that\, just as key pagan sites were being chosen for new churches\, so too the date was chosen with the intention to catapult Christmas into becoming a major festival by placing it over the pre-existing pagan festivals. \n\n\n\nChristmas Traditions\n\n\n\nMistletoe\n\n\n\nKissing someone who happens to be stood under a sprig of mistletoe is seen as a tradition popularised in Victorian England. However even this relatively modern tradition has much more ancient echoes in that Mistletoe bears its fruit around the time of the Winter Solstice\, and its supposed mythical ability to heal and increase fertility. \n\n\n\nIn Norse mythology\, an arrow made from mistletoe killed Balder\, who was a brother of Thor. Frigga\, Balder’s mother brought him back to life shedding tears that changed the red berries on mistletoe to white. Frigga then blessed the mistletoe and promised a kiss to anyone who passed beneath it. \n\n\n\nA hint of Mistletoe’s integration from pagan ceremonies into Christmas tradition is said that the mistletoe plant used to be a tree\, and its wood was used to make the cross on which Jesus was crucified. After the Crucifixion\, the plant shrivelled to became the parasitic vine we know today. \n\n\n\nCarol Singing\n\n\n\nAs mentioned earlier\, the tradition of singing of songs can be traced back to the pagan festivals before the advent of Christmas. Indeed\, the word carol is derived from the Greek word “choraulein”\, which meant “an ancient circle dance performed to flute music.” \n\n\n\nAs carols were already an established custom\, early Christians made the shrewd decision to integrate Christian songs into the tradition rather than ban the singing. \n\n\n\nMost new Christian Carols were written in Latin\, which was by the middle ages\, a language only used by the church\, thus reducing the popularity of the custom. \n\n\n\nHowever\, carols received an injection of popularity when St. Francis of Assisi started his Nativity Plays in Italy in 1223\, which included songs written in the local people’s language. \n\n\n\nThe tradition of ‘Modern’ Carol singing flourished in England. Known as Wassailing\, it was a chance for peasants to get some much-needed charity from their feudal lords. This singing for money developed in a custom involving travelling musicians who would visit wealthy homes\, singing in the hope of receiving money food or gifts in return. \n\n\n\nThere was a short interruption in 1647 when the Puritans come to power after the English Civil War. The Puritans\, under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell\, disapproved of the celebration of Christmas. There was even a fine of up to five shillings for anyone caught singing Christmas carols. When King Charles II came back to the throne in 1660\, the public singing of Christmas carols was permitted again.

SUMMARY:The 1949 Great March and Restoration Day
DESCRIPTION:The 1949 Great March and Restoration Day\n\n\n\nThis is a new holiday in the British Virgin Islands\, and its working title is Commemoration of the Great March of 1949 and the Restoration of the Legislative Council. It was observed on the second Monday of November in 2021\, but the date was changed to the fourth Monday in November from 2022. \n\n\n\nIt commemorates the events of  Thursday November 24th 1949\, when the people of the Virgin Islands marched through the streets of Road Town\, in what has come to be known as The Great March of 1949. \n\n\n\nThis historic march demanded a change to the way matters affected the lives of Virgin Islanders then\, now and this will continue well into the future. \n\n\n\nThe march was the catalyst for political development in the territory\, leading to the evolution of the Modern Virgin Islands. \n\n\n\nThe historic demonstration was led by one of the Territory’s heroes Theodolph Faulkner of Anegada. He was joined by other national heroes of the day\, Isaac “Glanny” Fonseca and Carlton deCastro\, and over 1\,500 British Virgin Islanders as they marched through the streets of Road Town to the Commissioner’s Office in protest of issues adversely impacting the Territory.

SUMMARY:Heroes and Fore-parents Day
DESCRIPTION:Originaly named Heroes and Forefathers Day\, the name was changed to Heroes and Foreparents Day in October 2021. \n\n\n\nIn a revamp of the British Overseas Territory’s public holidays to better reflect Virgin Islands culture and history\, this holiday replaces St. Ursula’s Day. \n\n\n\nDeputy Premier Dr. Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley explained that replacing St. Ursula’s Day with Heroes and Forefathers Day in October will afford the territory a chance to recognise important Virgin Islanders of the past. \n\n\n\n“It was recognised that we needed a day to celebrate people in our community who made contributions to the development of our society\,” Dr. Wheatley explained. \n\n\n\nHeroes’ and Foreparents Day holiday honours pioneers and outstanding community servants in fisheries and agriculture\, boat building\, health\, business\, politics\, public administration\, the arts and religion. \n\n\n\nThe men and women who built the Virgin Islands will be recognised for their contributions to the creation of the Virgin Islands we know today.   \n\n\n\nA holiday to mark national heroes is commonplace in many countries throughout the Caribbean.
